The Higher Court in Novi Sad has placed six people arrested at the Nov. 5 protest rally in Novi Sad in detention for up to 30 days. Among the six are one of the leaders of activist group SviCe (Sun Is Rising/Everyone Will) Ivan Bjelic and a minor.

Bjelic and the other arrested are suspected of the criminal offense of violent behavior at a public gathering, regarding incidents during one of the biggest protest rallies in Novi Sad that was held over last week's death of 14 people killed in the collapse of the concrete canopy at the city train station.

Opposition alderman in the Novi Sad Assembly Misa Baculov, who during the rally poured fecal matter out of a tank outside City Hall, has been placed under house arrest for 30 days.

The opposition People's Movement of Serbia has condemned the placement of Bjelic and other activists in detention, saying that they are unjustifiably being accused of acts they did not commit, with the aim of intimidating them and dissuading them from political activism and rebellion.

A former Vojvodina deputy premier, Goran Jesic, who is charged with assaulting an officer at the protest rally in Novi Sad, said on Nov. 8 that instead of the young people who had been arrested, those responsible for the 14 deaths at the railway station should be in custody.
