Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had been trying to divert attention away from the recent tragedy at the Novi Sad Railway station, where 14 people were killed when an outdoor concrete canopy collapsed, by imposing other less important issues in public, Zdravko Ponos, the leader of the opposition party Serbia Center (SRCE – Heart), has said.
Speaking to TV Nova S, Ponos said that Vucic had been trying to present “his several-minute phone conversation with (US President-elect Donald) Trump to congratulate him on the election win as the most important issue,” or his “escape to Baku, from where he has been addressing the nation speaking about small nuclear power reactors.”
“He has been trying to act as nothing has happened by bringing other topics to the forefront, thereby trying to avoid accountability,” Ponos said after a rally in Belgrade in the evening on Nov. 11, when protestors demanded accountability of the government representatives for the victims in the collapse of a large concrete overhang at the Novi Sad Railway station.
