Former prime minister and incumbent Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic's statement that "the Jadar project has absolutely been dropped," was chosen by Istinomer's readers as the biggest lie in its Lie of the Year 2024 traditional poll, the website announced on Dec. 19.
It added that the statement pertained to the lithium mining project in the Jadar valley, which sparked protests and public opposition over the potential enviromental dangers.
"When the Serbian Cabinet abolished a decree on a spatial plan for the special purpose Jadar area, Ana Brnabic claimed that the decision 'absolutely wraps that up' and that 'as far as the Jadar project and Rio Tinto go this is the end." Later, though, she said that the project was only 'paused' in 2022. Precisely because of this contradictory explanation and inconsistent public appearances, we have declared this statement a lie," Istinometar said in a statement.
It added that the second biggest lie in this year's poll, in which several statements by Ana Brnabic were rated as some of the biggest lies this year was a statement by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic: "Serbia is one of the safest countries in the world and in Europe," while the third biggest lie was a statement by Finance Minister Sinisa Mali that "the elections were clean as a whistle."
