Opposition parties and labor unions met on Dec. 23 to discuss opportunities to initiate a general strike and operational steps to that end, Social Democratic Party, which hosted the meeting at its offices, said in a release.
"A strong consensus was reached at the meeting that it’s necessary to continue discussions as to how opposition parties and labor unions can support the demand for a general strike. The demand was one of the student messages at the magnificent gathering at Slavija," the Social Democrats stated, without specifying who participated in the meeting.
The Social Democrats’ general secretary and labor activist Dragoslav Ljubicic emphasized that opposition parties should not stay aside and allow the burden of the struggle to fall solely on students.
"We believe it is essential for other segments of our society, especially workers, to wake up and follow the courage and determination shown by the students. I have been on the front lines of the fight for workers' rights for decades, and today the energy of these young people compels us all to do our part with equal responsibility and bravery," Ljubicic stated.
According to the release, the next meeting, to be hosted by the Together party, will be held in a week at the latest.
