On Jan. 15, the parliamentary caucus of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party submitted the signatures of over 100 of its MPs calling for an advisory referendum on the recall of Aleksandar Vucic, one of the party’s co-founders, from his current position as president of state.

“Here’s a hundred of our own signatures. We’re waiting on another 67 from the opposition. If the opposition does not submit signatures in favor of this initiative – which they haven’t done so far – that will only create addition tensions and serve as a means for them to destabilize Serbia,” Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic told a press conference in the National Assembly antechamber.

According to her, an advisory referendum would provide a democratic opportunity for the opposition to achieve its ultimate goal: the removal of Vucic as head of state.

Brnabic added that the referendum should be held since the non-governmental Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability (CRTA) published the results of study claiming that Vucic no longer has the support of the majority of the Serbian electorate.
