On Jan. 30 the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a comment on three-month-long protests in Serbia that the country must not be allowed to plunge into chaos as it faced numerous internal and external challenges and that she hoped that Serbia would solve its problems peacefully.

"It is exceptionally important that the demonstrators, public opinion leaders above all, demonstrate reasonability and not follow those fanning the flames of emotions. With regard to this Serbia must not be allowed to be engulfed by chaos. The country is already facing numerous external and internal challenges," the Russian Foreign Ministry's official representative Maria Zakharova said in response to being asked by the media to comment on the protests in Serbia.

In her response, which was posted on the Russian embassy in Belgrade's website, Zakharova said that "schisms are the most dangerous thing" adding that "the Serbian leadership is doing everything that it can to stop events from taking a dramatic turn." "Security bodies are doing their job professionally and respecting the right of the people to peacefully assemble. Serious steps directed at solving disagreements have been outlined, which take citizens' concerns into account. We see that the authorities are listening to the most important signals. On their part they are showing a willingness to hold a direct dialogue with everyone within the political process," Zakharova said.

She stressed that "this is the only true way toward reaching general consent in the interest of protecting sovereignty, national dignity and traditional values, preserving the internal stability of the country and securing its territorial integrity with regard to Kosovo and Metohija."
