In the night between March 17 and 18, protesting students and citizens gathered outside the Novi Sad City Assembly in an attempt to prevent holding of a session called for March 18, when aldermen should adopt a city budget.
Protesting students came to block the building around midnight, with a Gendarmerie unit arriving shortly, demanding from the crowd to disperse, but then the special intervention squad members attacked the gathered students, hitting and beating them with batons.
This was happening after 2 am, after which the situation calmed down.
Protesting students again gathered outside the Novi Sad City Assembly on March 18.
Scheduling of a Novi Sad City Assembly session on March 17 for the next day has been met with criticism among the opposition ranks, with some opposition parties saying they will boycott the assembly work.
