The BETA News Agency marked its 31st birthday on May 4, celebrating the release of its first report on May 4, 1994.
BETA will celebrate its 31st anniversary by opening its "BETA Photo of the Year" exhibition on May 29 at the European House in Belgrade. It will be the 22nd awards ceremony for the most successful authors participating in the agency’s traditional contest for best media photograph in the territory of Southeast Europe.
The "Dragan Janjic" Media Literacy Award will also be presented in memory of BETA journalist Dragan Janjic (1955–2020), one of the founders of Beta and the Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia (NUNS). The "Damjan Diklic" Award goes to the author of the best photo depicting the life and inclusion of people with special needs.
BETA was founded during the breakup of Yugoslavia and the wars in its wake. It was registered in 1992 and began operations two years later. The agency was established by a group of Belgrade independent journalists, namely, Ljubica Markovic, Julija Bogoeva, Radomir Diklic, and Dusan Reljic. Its other founders, Dragan Janjic, Aleksandar Nenadovic, Stevan Niksic, and Djordje Zorkic, have passed away.
BETA was set up as a service for news from Serbia, a republic in the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the region, and several global centers. Today, BETA offers modern, multimedia news content while respecting laws, the journalistic code of ethics and professionals standards for journalists. In 2003, BETA launched Radio Sto Plus (100 Plus) in Novi Pazar, which broadcasts in the Sandzak region. The agency pays special attention to environmental issues, and has developed the "Green Serbia" website. BETA also follows closely European integration policies through its Daily European Service.
