European Union ambassador to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret said on May 9 at a reception marking Europe Day and Victory Day in World War II that Serbia was part of Europe and that the EU wanted to build a Europe founded on democratic values together with the citizens of Serbia.
"Serbia is Europe, and we are better together. Together with Serbia and its citizens, we want to build a Europe that rests on democratic values. We want this because human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, and respect for human rights are the values upon which the EU is built," Giaufret said.
"We want to defend free and independent journalism, which is an invaluable resource in building accountable institutions," he added. He emphasized that the EU was founded on the vision of "building Europe through concrete achievements that would lead to genuine solidarity" and that this vision "has become a reality."
"Thanks to EU enlargement, more and more people are traveling freely, economies are growing, and new job opportunities are opening up. We are proud of the values upon which the EU is based and determined to defend them," he said, adding that the EU was founded on the values of democracy and the rule of law, and that it must continue to support Ukraine.
