European Union High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said on May 24 that the Western Balkans held a strategic importance to the EU, adding that enlargement to the region "is our most significant geopolitical project" and a personal priority for her.

In an Instagram post about a report on her work during this week, Kallas wrote that she had concluded a visit to the Western Balkans having sent a clear message during her stay in Serbia. "My message to the authorities in Belgrade was clear. I want to see Serbia advancing towards the EU. For that, political leaders must deliver the necessary reforms and clarify the strategic direction. This is best done by restoring trust and staying true to democratic principles," Kallas wrote.

Kallas said she had encouraged all parties in Kosovo to "break the political stalemate and swiftly form a government. "Leaders need to set aside divisions and prioritize the future of Kosovo," she said in the Instagram post, which she illustrated with a series of photographs from her tour of the Western Balkans.

The high representative said North Macedonia "is the first country in the region" to sign a security and defense partnership with the EU and to benefit from the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. She went on to note that North Macedonia "belongs in our European family" and that it was essential for it to proceed on the EU path.
