Local Elections in Serbia, June 2 2024 (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
School of Political Science Dean Maja Kovacevic said on July 3 that social change was not far and she did not believe that elections would only be held when the regime announced that they would, and that they would have to be called before that.
“It is my impression that we can expect elections to be called probably in the fall, because the instability that we are in is dangerous, not just for our country but the surrounding” region, Kovacevic said in an interview with NIN.
She said that she frequently cited the European Security Strategy, ergo, an official EU official document: “In a situation in which you have widespread corruption, illegitimate institutions, where there is no political responsibility, when you have huge dissatisfaction on the part of citizens, these are situations that the EU calls ‘an implosion of the state.’”
“This is because things can escalate at any moment, in any direction, and is therefore seen as a security threat. I also believe that the EU, with all of the criticism that we can send its way, is not going to tolerate this kind of instability practically on its borders,” Kovacevic added. Asked to comment on the serious incidents and arrests in the wake of the St. Vitus protest on June 28, she said that the escalation of the situation had happened because the regime had realized that the support for students was not abating, which was contrary to what it had hoped for.
