EXPO 2027 (BETAPHOTO/MILAN ILIC)

Serbian citizens and non-governmental organizations are signing an initiative to officially notify the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) of systemic violations of the law, corruption and safety risks related to the Expo specialized international exhibition, which is to take place in Belgrade in 2027.

The document, which will be sent to BIE Secretary General Dimitri Kerkentzes, members of the BIE Executive Board and all delegations of the BIE member countries, says that through official notification the organization "is warned about serious, credible and documented violations of the law" related to Expo 2027.

The document also says that official notification is based on publicly available information, official documents, investigative reports, and experts' analyses, and that the evidence presented "is a textbook example of state capture, where the government apparatus has been systematically corrupted in order to serve private interests at the expense of public well-being."

"These are not just isolated cases of corruption, but rather an all-encompassing subversion of democratic governance and rule of law. The integrity of the World Expo movement and the safety of millions of potential visitors depend on swift and decisive action by the Bureau International des Expositions. History has shown that the international organizations which do not react to credible evidence of corruption suffer permanent damage to their legitimacy and efficiency," the document reads.
