Belgrade Pride 2021 (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV/DS)
The Belgrade Pride organization said on Aug. 5 that this year’s event would serve as a voice of protest more than ever before, adding that during the Pride March the participants would be making noise, instead of singing and playing music
“The march on Sept. 6 will be a protest walk – for justice, for institutions, for all other families invisible to the law, for all trans-gender and nonbinary people who have suffered systemic and social discrimination for years, as well as for protesting students, many of whom are queer, and who have been for nine months fighting for a better future," Belgrade Pride organizers said in a post on Facebook.
They said that although the Pride concert had been for years a must of each Belgrade Pride, “this year, we cannot turn a blind eye to what is happening.” “All the while students and citizens are subject to police brutality, people are held as political prisoners, young activists placed on wanted lists, and institutions failing to respond to the demands of students and citizens, Pride will not participate in any sort of apparent normality. So, this year, instead of music, we will be making noise during the march,” it is said in the post.
Program at the Pride Park will be adjusted accordingly, while the traditional concert will be replaced by speeches of LGBTI+ activists, students and victims of police brutality, as well as addresses and acts by the Pride Chorus queen and local queer DJ. “Queer struggle has always been a struggle for a fairer, more solidary and more equal society, and Pride has always fought for these values. The family will be on the streets yet again this year, for the future that belongs to everyone,” the organizers said.
