Students in Nis (BETAPHOTO/SASA DJORDJEVIC/)
National Youth Council of Serbia (KOMS) on Aug. 12 said that 95 percent of young people support student protests, while more than 90 percent were ready to cast ballots in parliamentary elections.
According to the Alternative 2025 report on the position and needs of young people in Serbia, compiled by KOMS and published on Aug. 12, International Youth Day, more than 90 percent of young people are dissatisfied with the government’s response to student protests.
The report also surveyed youth confidence in public figures. Serbian Patriarch Porfirije was given a mark of 1.44, down from his previous 2.39, University of Belgrade Rector Vladan Djokic received 2.08, while President Aleksandar Vucic scored 1.11, down from 1.5, his regular mark over the past years.
For young people, the biggest problems in the society include corruption, lack of empathy and justice, and the value system.
Presenting the report, KOMS Secretary General Milica Borjanic said the main reasons cited by young people for not going to the polls include that all politicians were the same and were not working to the benefit of citizens, and that there was no one to vote for at the moment. The leading reason this year for 62.4 percent of the surveyed youth is unfair elections.
She also said that 60 percent of young people considered democracy to be the best form of government, up by 20 percent against last year.
