The Jadranski Naftovod (Adriatic Oil Pipeline – JANAF) company announced on Oct. 8 that it had obtained the permit to continue delivering crude oil to the Naftna Industrija Srbije (Serbian Oil Industry – NIS) until Oct. 15.

JANAF announced this officially on its web-site, while NIS has not yet made an announcement. JANAF, which operates with NIS, announced that it had requested and obtained the license permitting the undertaking of activities that are common and required for transporting oil, with the aim of completion of all activities mandated within contracts for crude oil transport with NIS until Oct. 15.

The company running the pipeline stated that it possessed no information on whether NIS had also obtained the license that would defer the sanctions. NIS was placed under sanctions at the start of this year because of the Russian stake in ownership, but they have been deferred so far. The U.S. sanctions against NIS will come into effect on Oct. 9 at 6:00 a.m., unless an agreement is reached soon.

So far, the sanctions have been deferred eight times – six times by a month, then by only four days at the end of September – to Oct. 1, and finally by another week. NIS has filed a new supplemented request to the U.S. for the deferment of the sanctions. The request is for the issuing of a special license to allow the unobstructed operation of the company beyond Oct. 8, when the existing license expires.
