Russian Ambassador Alexander Botscan Harchenko said on Oct. 16 that Russia wished Serbia to have “a stable supply of gas, at the best possible price,” adding that he was convinced that Moscow’s decision to extend the natural gas arrangement only until the New Year “was the result of commercial and technical reasons and has nothing to do with politics.”
“I don’t understand the concerns and tensions [raised] over the duration of the contract, as if there are doubts that Russia may one day say that it will not extend it,” Botscan Harchenko said in an interview with Vecernje Novosti, denying that the decision means keeping Serbia “on a tight leash.” According to him, there is “a contract and agreement on the highest level between the two presidents that the supply will be stable, uninterrupted and at the most favorable price.”
“The contract is of the highest level and is long-term,” the ambassador said and added that Serbia’s citizens could rest assured that they would have enough fuel.
