On Oct. 21 in Zrenjanin, President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said that the elections in 2026 will be the most significant in modern Serbian history and asked his Serbian Progressive Party to win the vote more decisively than ever before.
In an evening address celebrating the 17th anniversary of the ruling party – which Vucic co-founded and led between 2012 and 2023 – the president of state did not specify when said elections will be called even though the country’s protesting university students and their supporters have been demanding an early vote for months.
Lambasting the opposition, Vucic claimed that the elections will present a choice between neutrality, independence, economic development and looking toward the future on one hand, and a return to the past on the other.
Vucic then called on Progressive members and supporters to fight even more resolutely for their country at the election, “whenever it may be,” promising personal aid, even though, as he said, he cannot run for president of state again.
“Today, Serbia is awoken, prouder, returned to itself and its people,” Vucic stated, adding that, due to the ongoing “color revolution,” Serbia would not exist were it not for the Progressives and the country’s top leadership.
