Students, high-school graduates and citizens observed 16 minutes of silence on Nov. 12 in honor of the victims of the railway station overhang collapse in Novi Sad last year and in support of Dijana Hrka, the mother of one of the victims, who is on hunger strike in front of the Serbian parliament.
The citizens gathered in front of the parliament where Dijana Hrka has been on hunger strike for 11 days now and, during the observing of the 16 minutes of silence, they blocked lanes in both directions in Takovska Street at the junction with Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra Street. Rector of the University in Belgrade Vladan Djokic was also present.
The parents of the pupils of the Fifth Belgrade Gymnasium, who rallied in front of the Ministry of Education to protest the non-fulfillment of the pupils’ demand for the dismissal of the acting principal, Danka Neskovic, also observed the 16 minutes of silence. Citizens of Novi Sad paid homage near the Banovina building, where Milomir Jacimovic, the owner of a transport company who drove the students to protests in Serbia, and his son are also on hunger strike, demanding the return of their buses that the police have seized and the annulment of the fines issued.
The pupils of four gymnasiums in Nis – “Svetozar Markovic,” “Stevan Sremac,” “Bora Stankovic” and “May 9th” who boycotted classes on Nov. 12 in support of Dijana Hrka, also stood in silence for 16 minutes.
