November saw 154 recorded instances of politicians targeting critical journalists and media outlets in Serbia, the Slavko Curuvija Foundation said in a press release on Dec. 8, noting that the worst offenders had been Serbian Progressive Party MP Nebojsa Bakarec, with 44 instances, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, with 18.
Among the 36 senior state officials and members of parliament who, according to the Slavko Curuvija Foundation report, verbally attacked journalists in November, were also Progressive MP Vladimir Djukanovic with 17 instances and National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic with ten instances.
The Slavko Curuvija Foundation said that, in their public appearances, MPs and top state officials "strove to discredit critical media outlets, journalists and journalist associations, which were described as 'so-called independent journalist associations' and 'so-called free and independent media,' to intentionally spread fake news and biased accounts, and to provide protection to journalists selectively."
"In november, media outlets were called 'outposts of foreign agencies,' 'factories of hate,' 'blockader media,' 'color revolution media bulletins,' 'Solak's media machinery,' 'lie jukeboxes,' 'poisoners of the people'...
The monitoring was conducted from Nov. 1 to 30 by analyzing content posted on the websites of Informer, Alo and Republika and on the official social media accounts of various holders of public office "who set themselves apart by their frequent targeting of journalists -- Aleksandar Vucic, Ana Brnabic, Milos Vucevic, Vladimir Djukanovic, Milica Djurdjevic Stamenkovski, Nebojsa Bakarec."
