The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) called on Feb. 26 on Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Speaker Ana Brnabic to stop targeting journalists and the media and condemned their statements against the N1 TV station's staff.
The Association said that what had led to Vucic's and Brnabic's statements in public and on social media was news of the arrest of war veterans for an alleged plot on Vucic's life after N1 ran a statement by the attorney for the arrested men, in addition to a police statement, that the arrest "is intimidation before the up-coming rally on March 15."
"Their statements often become the starting point for the dirtiest campaigns in tabloids that result in threats to journalists on social media and in real life. Over the last year these threats have grown into physical attacks, the number of which in 2025 set a record in Serbia's recent history, while the relevant bodies, police and prosecutors, solve a negligible amount of these cases," the Association said.
The Association called on international organizations that deal in protecting freedom of speech, the media and human rights to monitor and react to the authorities' behavior toward the media in Serbia.
