Serbian Parliament Speaker and ruling Progressive Party of Serbia official Ana Brnabic said on April 2 that snap parliamentary elections will happen when “the only relevant authority” so decides, with said authority being the president of state, Aleksandar Vucic – and added that the Progressives will ask Vucic to be their candidate for prime minister.
Speaking for the RTS public broadcaster, Brnabic said that a social dialogue is necessary and that it will begin as of April 3, with President Vucic giving everyone an opportunity.
“When we speak of a lack of dialogue, we aren’t speaking about Aleksandar Vucic not wanting a dialogue. Those constantly preaching dialogue are actually the ones refusing dialogue,” said Brnabic and opined that she is reasonably confident that many will refuse the call for talks issued by the president.
Brnabic stressed that the hardest discussions will be with the membership and leadership of the Progressive Party, because its people have “had enough of not speaking up about Brussels’s double standards and bald hypocrisy.”
According to her, a dialogue is necessary not only regarding early parliamentary elections but also Serbia’s foreign policy.
“The only reason President Vucic still hasn’t called snap elections is because the world is facing a crisis unprecedented in our lifetime,” she stated and added that “thanks to President Vucic, Serbia is much more prepared for this crisis than many of the strongest countries in Europe.
Addressing the topic of early parliamentary elections, Brnabic said that the Progressives will “beg” Vucic to run for prime minister and recalled that he can no longer run for president.
