On May 4, ahead of the opening of the 8th European Political Community Summit, in Yerevan, Armenia, Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut said the Vertical Natural Gas Corridor represents one of the most significant new energy projects in southeast and central Europe as well as a key instrument in stabilizing the market.
The pipeline’s route, from Greece, through Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, is strategic and links a large number of countries for the purpose of transporting gas from south to north, Macut explained.
“For Serbia, as a country which largely depends on imported natural gas, the key challenges are diversifying supply sources, increasing interconnection and reducing the risk of geopolitical disruptions,” the prime minister said.
According to him, Serbia views its energy security as an integral part of national security and a key prerequisite for further economic growth and development.
Macut concluded by stating that Europe’s current energy situation is marked by a deep transformation from dependence to diversification.
