Serbian Parliament speaker Ana Brnabic on May 5 said that in Denmark she and her counterparts discussed the need to strengthen cooperation among the EU candidate countries.
Brnabic said that in Copenhagen, hosting a conference of the speakers of the EU parliaments and the candidate countries, a first informal meeting was held of the initiative “introducing a special type of collaboration among the EU candidate countries,” adding that its main goal is to “always ensure the same rules and the same standards for all candidate countries.”
“As we discussed here, we are all facing the same or similar problems. Firstly, bilateral issues that are imposed on our EU path, which must not be imposed. Secondly, the matters imposed by the EU, sometimes even as experimental solutions. Something that does not exist anywhere in the EU is required from the candidate countries in order to access to the EU. Together, we can fight against such things in a much easier way,” Brnabic told Serbian media.
She also said that the third issue include “major delays in the EU comments and waiting for European Commission’s opinion on some bills.”
Brnabic stressed it is important for her that the initiative includes Ukraine and Moldova, the two countries respecting Serbia’s territorial integrity, and “in that context, they do not wish to Pristina’s representatives in this format.”
Brnabic said she hopes that a set of judicial laws, amended in accordance with the standards of the Venice Commission, will be adopted by June. Speaking about changes to election laws, she said that they will be on the parliament’s agenda on May 18, and are slated for adoption by the end May.
