A Serbian Assembly sitting to debate amendments to four election laws will begin on May 12, which, according to government representatives, aim to harmonize them with the recommendations of the Monitoring Mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

The amendments have been formally proposed by Miroslav Petrasinovic, MP of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party.

The MPs will debate amendments to the Law on the Election of the President of the Republic, the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament, the Law on Local Elections, and the Law on the Constitutional Court.

Last week, four public debates on the set of election laws were held in Kragujevac, Nis, Novi Sad, and Belgrade. The key changes, according to Petrasinovic, refer to increasing professional capacities of polling board members and reducing the time provided to the Constitutional Court to decide on cases related to election results.

Some opposition parties and experts have presented a number of objections to the proposed amendments, describing them as cosmetic changes which will not ensure essential changes in the election process, which, according to them, has been abused by the authorities.
