In an interview for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty published on July 29, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson requested that the next annual OSCE Parliamentary Assembly be moved from Serbia to South Carolina because of “undue influence” Russian President Vladimir Putin has in Serbia and the Chinese Communist Party has on official Belgrade.
“The national oil company, sadly, there, NIS [Naftna Industrija Srbije], has been bought by war criminal Putin,” Wilson stated. “Additionally, there is undue influence by the Chinese Communist Party in terms of communications and other investments, and to make it even more obnoxious, an association with the dictatorship in Tehran.”
Asked about the fact that Serbia is negotiating the sale of NIS’s Russian majority stake, Wilson opined that negotiations were “not enough” and that Serbia is too dependent on Russian oil.
Led by Wilson – the Republican representative and head of the U.S. delegation in the OSCE Assembly – a bipartisan group of 40 lawmakers requested that the U.S. Congress pass a resolution calling for the 2027 OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to be held in Charleston, South Carolina, instead of Belgrade.
