Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated in Surcin on May 14, during an inspection of the construction site of the specialized EXPO 2027 event, that he had been invited to the observation of 20 years of Montenegro’s independence, but that he would not attend.

“I have received the invitation to the glamorous celebration of the secession from my Serbia. Naturally, I will not attend. I love Serbia more than anything in the world and celebrating that would mean a spit in the face of my people and my own. As for them – may they celebrate what they want,” Vucic stated.

He stated further that he was convinced the Serbs and other citizens of Montenegro would “always view Serbia as a brotherly country.” Vucic went on to say that it was “odd that the Serbs in Montenegro have no right to use the Serbian language as an official one, since it is the dominant language in Montenegro.”

“It is odd that Europe is not insisting on that, while insisting on everything else. But, as much as it is odd, it is neither unusual, nor surprising,” Vucic stated.

At a referendum in May 2006, the majority of citizens of Montenegro voted in favor of their country leaving the state community of Serbia and Montenegro. The referendum question was the following: “Do you want the Republic of Montenegro to be an independent country with full international and legal subjectivity?” In favor were 55.5 percent of the citizens who cast their vote, which amounted to 47.5 percent of the electorate.
