By stating he is not certain who Serbia’s president will be come October and by estimating snap elections will take place in June only to move the timeframe to July, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is attempting to confuse and unsettle his political opponents, Zdravko Ponos, the leader of the oppositional Serbia Center party, said on May 21.
Speaking for the Danas daily, Ponos opined that Vucic does not have a clear plan and that his entire strategy “revolves around assuming the role of prime minister.”
“His steps largely depend on what [his] polling agency and partners from the business and organized crime world will tell him. He arrogantly enters elections only when he believes he has a significant upper hand, meaning he will successfully steal votes, unnoticed by the OSCE and unpunished by the EU,” Ponos stated.
Regular presidential elections in Serbia are supposed to be called in April 2027 but there has been talk that Vucic may resign so that snap parliamentary and presidential elections could be held simultaneously before the year is out.
