Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic should say whether he intends to take over the post of prime minister, after the announced resignation as president, based on the support of the current parliament or only after a snap general election has been held, the alliance Monarchists - Movement for the Kingdom of Serbia said in a statement on June 11.

"It is clear that Vucic is seriously considering the possibility of leaving the position of president of the Republic and taking over the position of prime minister. However, he avoids saying whether he would use the support of the current makeup of the parliament for election to the new post or if he would first seek new legitimacy of this institution in an election," Monarchists co-president Dusan Radosavljevic said in the statement.

He underscored that the current makeup of the parliament no longer has the political legitimacy to elect a new Serbian government because, as he put it, it obviously does not represent the will of the majority of citizens.

"If Vucic truly wants to become prime minister, let him first call a snap general election and seek citizens' support. Only in that way could he get indisputable democratic legitimacy. Otherwise, his being elected prime minister by the existing majority would be another attempt at keeping power without checking the will of the people, i.e. contrary to their will," said Radosavljevic.
