Incumbent president of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic would most prefer a cohabitation model of government following snap parliamentary elections because this would create the illusion of democracy in the country, Social Democratic Party leader Boris Tadic said on July 13.

In an interview for the Danas daily, Tadic – who helmed Serbia from 2004 to 2012 – said that cohabitation would reduce the tensions in the country.

“While our side would be celebrating a ‘great victory,’ behind the scenes, [Vucic] would celebrate positioning himself to potentially strengthen his rule even more. A cohabitation president must possess a serious level of skill and political experience to depart [the arrangement] victorious and such a situation is very complex,” the opposition leader stated.

According to Tadic, without coordination and agreement between all opposition actors, it will not be possible to defeat the current regime.
