Patriarch Porfirije, Dritan Abazovic, Fundamental agreement (BETAPHOTO/MONTENEGRO GOVERNMENT )

On Aug. 3, Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic and Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Porfirije met in Podgorica and signed a fundamental agreement which is to regulate the relationship between the Montenegrin government and the Serbian Church.

Neither the signing nor the arrival of the Serbian patriarch to Montenegro’s capital had previously been announced.

Certain groups in Montenegro are strongly against the fundamental agreement saying it goes against Montenegro’s interests. Both the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Party of Socialists have warned they would withdraw their support to their government if the agreement is signed.
