President of the European Council Charles Michel has postponed his planned July 2-3 visit to Montenegro over the country’s decision to adopt a Resolution on Jasenovac – which labeled the crimes committed at the WW2 Croatian concentration camp a genocide – the Council has confirmed for the Pobjeda daily.
The decision was made “to ensure that talks with key figures in the country are successful, and not cast in the shadow of the latest events,” the newspaper was told by an unofficial Brussels source.
Michel was supposed to address the Parliament of Montenegro on July 3, with Speaker Andrija Mandic having scheduled a special sitting of the body’s first regular Spring Session.
In a June 30 evening post on the X social network following media reports on the deferral of Michel’s visit and reasons behind it, Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic announced that he would be going to Brussels on July 2 at Michel’s invitation.
“Our EU partners remain dedicated to Montenegro’s full membership [in the Union]. As president of state, I will do everything in my power and jurisdiction, and with the help of all European powers, to bring Montenegro’s EU ‘Agenda 2028’ to fruition,” Milatovic wrote.
