The Slovenian Ministry of Defense has signed a letter of intent with France for procuring self-propelled Caesar howitzers and Mistral anti-aircraft missile systems, only days after official Ljubljana announced at a NATO summit in Washington that it was purchasing Patria AMV XP armored wheeled vehicles from Finland.
The Balkan security network website reported that the letter of intent would enable all of the details surrounding the purchases of Caesars and Mistral systems to be defined.
Slovenia has thereby positively responded to voices in the EU encouraging member states to cooperate more closely in the areas of defense, purchasing weapons and strengthening technological and industrial capacities in the area of their armed forces. Due to this Ljubljana will be eligible for funding from European funds which will cover part of the costs of procuring weapons.
The process of renewing the Slovenian army's weapons began on July 10 when the country's Prime Minister Robert Golob announced at the NATO summit that Ljubljana was prepared to buy Patria AMV XPs from Finland and that the job would be finalized by the end of the year.
