The mining and energy minister of Republika Srpska (RS), Petar Djokic, stated on July 31 that there was no initiative or request for the exploitation of lithium in RS.

He stressed that geological exploration in the area of Lopare was complete and that nobody had filed a request for exploitation, adding that no activities of that type were under way in this locality and that this option was not being considered at this time.

“The mayor of Bijeljina, Ljubisa Petrovic, and the municipal chief of Lopare, Rado Savic, are deceiving the population by false and made-up stories about preparations for lithium exploitation in RS. I demand that they immediately stop manipulating and acting on that basis,” Djokic said, as announced by the RS Ministry for Energy and Mining.

He added that it was important to recognize the huge difference between exploration and exploitation. “Exploration projects are necessary and useful and very affirmative as a scientific discipline, but they do not necessary mean that there would be exploitation in a particular location,” Djokic concluded.
