North Macedonia’s President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova has said that Skopje’s goal is to step up a transition to a low-carbon economy in all sectors, including energy, transport, industry, and agriculture.
Siljanovska Davkova made the statement at the first part of the high-level segment of the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, hearing national statements from heads of state and government, according to a release from the North Macedonian president’s Office on Nov. 13.
“In order to achieve green growth, we will invest in green jobs and requalification of employees in electricity generation with high carbon content. A sustainable energy transition must be ecologically and socially just,” Siljanovska Davkova said. She stressed that by adopting a Climate Action Law, North Macedonia would establish a legal framework for monitoring, reporting, verification, and accreditation, and would in parallel amend the Energy Law and pass a new law on renewable energy sources.
“These acts underpin implementation of challenging Cluster 4 - Green Agenda and Sustainable Connectivity in membership talks with the European Union, which require investments of EUR3.1 billion in renewable energy and energy efficiency. Funding for that is provided under the Economic and Investment plan and Green Agenda for the Western Balkans,” she said.
