Croatia’s outgoing president and the presidential candidate of the oppositional Social Democratic Party, Zoran Milanovic, said on Dec. 29 that he will fight to ensure his country has its own opinions and protects its own interests.

“I will fight for the rule of law, against governmental overreach and violence against human nature, property or dignity. There has been too much such violence in Croatia in the last few years. Whoever shares this stance even marginally will be my friend, while I’ll attempt to have no enemies,” Milanovic said in an evening address from his campaign headquarters, after narrowly losing re-election in the first round of the presidential race.

According to 99.88 percent of ballots counted, Milanovic garnered 49.1 percent of votes, which was just shy of the minimum 50 percent required.

The second round of presidential elections will take place on Jan. 12, where Milanovic will compete against Dragan Primorac, the candidate of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union, who, as runner-up in the first round, won 19.35 percent of votes cast.
