Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said in Belgrade on Feb. 15 that the combined cycle power plant (CCPP) project in Serbia would be among his country’s major investments in Europe.

“It will be one of Azerbaijan’s major investments in Europe. It speaks of mutual trust, which is exceptionally deep, because investments are made only in the countries with which you maintain good relations, where you have partners you can trust, and where you know that stability and progress are important factors long-term, which is the case with Serbia,” Aliyev said during his visit to Serbia.

On Feb. 15, Serbian and Azerbaijani delegations exchanged a number of signed bilateral documents. Also, two agreements were signed - on cooperation in the field of food safety, and on development, design, construction, and operation of a CCPP in Serbia.

After meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that a 500 MW CCPP in the vicinity of Nis, a joint project with Azerbaijan, should be commissioned by 2029. He also stressed that Serbia would need more plants of this type as the era of rising electricity demand was ahead.
