Fraport Slovenija, the Ljubljana airport’s operator, has announced major lay-offs as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Unofficially, Fraport Slovenija is set to lay off a quarter of its workers. The company’s union is hoping for state assistance, SeeBiz has reported.
Due to a sharp drop in traffic and modest forecasts for the near future, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Fraport Slovenija has been forced to downsize. Unions have been notified of the reduced need for labor, and the need for more workers for business reasons.
According to unofficial information, the current plan is to lay off 120 workers or a fourth of the total number of employees in Fraport Slovenija, which currently employs 475 workers.
The company practically has no occasional workers or students left in it, and is maintaining only full-time workers, according to the Slovenian press agency, the president of the airport’s free union, Klemen Lavric, has said.
The exact number of severance payments is not yet known, but Lavric hopes that the 120 severance payments will be close to the maximum because this is a huge number. This is expected to be cleared up after a meeting of union and administration representatives.
Lavric said that after the meeting, possible solutions would be produced. Meanwhile, he hopes that the state will help out and reduce the need for massive lay-offs. Fraport Slovenija has been making only 15% of its usual income since mid-March, SeeBiz reported.
