Having delayed it for years, the Serbian government has finally passed a new media strategy for the period between 2020 and 2025. As for the timing, it was chosen to occur right before the beginning of the election campaign for Serbia’s regular parliamentary vote due next spring. The ruling coalition is trying to present the move as a major concession to the opposition, which has been seeking improvements to electoral rules for some time. Yet the document can’t change what the media may be doing during the campaign. The media strategy will serve as a basis for passing various media laws, which clearly cannot happen before a new cabinet is in place.
