World Health Organization (WHO) office chief in Serbia Marijan Ivanusa said on July 16 that health measures to protect against the spread of the coronavirus needed to stay in effect and observed to mitigate the epidemiological situation as much as possible this fall.
"In Europe the peak of first wave was very serious, hence the situation was assuaged through the use of emergency measures. As measures were relaxed, we expected a worsening of the situation and now we see this worsening, and not just in Belgrade but in numerous countries across Europe," Ivanusa told Serbian state TV.
He said that the authorities "need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best." According to him, the best preventive measures is preventing contact, and that the symptoms of the virus appear several days after a person becomes contagious.
"If you have someone who seems completely healthy, this person could spread the virus. People with the disease stay contagious for from one to two weeks after the symptoms appear, and longer in more difficult cases," Ivanusa said.
