The epidemiologist Predrag Kon said on July 24 that the number of new COVID-19 cases in Belgrade had begun to drop off, but warned that preventive measures must be kept in place, as the decline depended on discipline.
"This is the situation stabilizing. It's far from good. [...] People are eager to have a good time. I'm begging them to restrain themselves," Kon told the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation.
On the topic of a vaccine, Kon said it was "one thing for it to emerge, and something completely different to have it in adequate quantities." "An anti-vaccine atmosphere is building in advance, which is complete idiocy. Regulations are very clear that only what is safe can be used. A vaccine is a visible lifeline. It would replace natural, collective immunity with vaccine immunity," he added.
Kon said it would be difficult to give a long-term prognosis, but that the epidemic curve would decline over the next three weeks. "After that, we'll have a period where it will remain at that level. We'll have to see if it will subside. With the coming of fall and winter, the expectation is that it may break out again," Kon went on to say.
