Prime Minister Ana Brnabic on Aug. 4, said that President Aleksandar Vucic was seriously considering a coalition with the Serbian Patriotic Alliance (SPAS – salvation), led by former water polo player Aleksandar Sapic, noting that she was one of two candidates for premiership.

Brnabic told TV Pink that Vucic was very disappointed with some of his close associates and was also deeply hurt by the support offered by his coalition partners from the Socialist Party of Serbia to the recent opposition protests in Belgrade.

Brnabic further said Vucic believed that Sapic had many shortcomings and that he had to learn and work, but that he appreciated his fighting spirit. “Aleksandar Sapic has demonstrated that he wants and is able to fight, and he showed that in the time when our coalition partners, primarily the Socialists, and also some from the Serbian Progressive Party, did not fight in the same way,” Brnabic said.

She declined to reveal the name of the other candidate for premiership, only saying. “The other candidate is a member of the Progressives, an individual whom I would back at all times.”

Brnabic further said that Vucic had requested from his party members to give their say on four possible options for a future cabinet: a coalition with the Socialists, a coalition with Sapic-led SPAS, a coalition with both, the Socialists and SPAS, and the final option is a government formed by the Progressives with the backing of minority parties. “I voted for a cabinet comprising the Progressives and minority parties. I do believe it is the best option for Serbia,” the outgoing premier specified.
