The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Serbia Office, Marijan Ivanusa, on Sept. 8 said that the coronavirus situation in Serbia “is relatively good,” but stressed it was necessary to stay cautious and abide by the prescribed countermeasures, such as wearing face coverings and keeping physical distance.

Ivanusa told TV Prva it had proved relatively simple to contain the virus spread by abiding by the prescribed measures.

Ivanusa further said he hoped that coronavirus vaccines would be available by the end of the year, adding that some 20 Covid-19 candidate vaccines had been currently developed, nine of which were in the final testing stage.

Asked which vaccine could be considered the best, Ivanusa replied that “the WHO does not issue approvals for vaccines,” stressing that it was under the jurisdiction of relevant national agencies.

“I would not give advantage to any producer. We should wait for the completion of the final stage of clinical testing in order to be sure that a vaccine is safe. It is important that all vaccine development stages are done properly and that exist institutions to control the process,” Ivanusa specified.
