Patriarch Irinej, head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, died on Nov. 20, as confirmed by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on his Instagram page - Future of Serbia.
Vucic captioned a photo of him and patriarch Irinej with the words: "It was an honor to have known you. People like you never really leave..."
Patriarch Irinej had COVID-19 and was being treated at a military hospital in Belgrade's neighborhood of Karaburma. He tested positive on Nov. 4 and was hospitalized the next day.
His condition took a sudden turn for the worse on Nov. 19, and he required life support.
The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church was 90 when he died.
