Editor-in-chief of the Balkan Investigative Journalistic Network (BIRN) Milorad Ivanovic said on Dec. 17 that there were no mainstream media outlets in Serbia to inform citizens truthfully and that they were frequently the victims of fake news.

Ivanovic told the BETA news agency in an interview that the amount of fake news published in one year by traditional media outlets now equaled the amount of fake news published in a single day on social media.

Asked by BETA who was affected the most by fake news, Ivanovic replied that currently fake news on the coronavirus and vaccination affected citizens the most. As long as lying is allowed, BIRIN's editor said and those who do this could do so with impunity, nothing would really change.

"If we had two large-scaled serious print media outlets in Serbia, with powerful internet sites, if the public broadcasting corporation would do its job and if we had a free media locally on the local level like we had in the 1990s, there would be no problems on the Serbian media scene," he said.
