The Holy Assembly of Bishops called to elect the new patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church commenced on Feb. 18, with a liturgy held in Saint Sava Memorial Cathedral in Belgrade.

Following the service, the Assembly will hold a session “according to the procedure provided by the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the cannons of the Holy Church,” the Church’s official press release reads.

No media presence had been planned for the event  and “an official press release will be issued after the session,” it says in the same statement.

The assembly is being held at the end of the three month period after Serbian Patriarch Irinej’s death, which is the longest period the Church can be without a head according to its constitution.

The ringing of the church bells will announce the election of the new patriarch who, custom has it, will be introduced to the office the following day, when he will be handed the official insignia during a holy service in the Cathedral Church of St. Michael in Belgrade.
