More than 500 members of Serbia's academic community, intellectuals, journalists, sociologists, psychologists, artists and public figures have signed a petition to support an initiative to pass a same-sex union bill.
"We are supporting the struggle for the rights of the LGBTI+ community in Serbia, manifested, among other things, in passing a same-sex union bill. We believe it's part of the fight for a better society, based on equal human rights as a civilizational achievement, in which no one will be stigmatized and discriminated against," they said in the petition which was released on March 20.
They also said that the bill was just the first step in materializing the rights of the LGBTI+ community, recognizing and legislating their most basic needs.
The signatories understand that negative emotions on one part of Serbian society, which feels threatened, will surround the community's struggle. "Such emotional reactions make it clear that they don't understand what LGBTI+ communities are, and what their needs are. This can't be a valid argument against the new law though, but rather an indicator in which direction anti-discrimination and educational activities and practices should go," the petition says.
