The European Parliament has passed a resolution on Serbia's progress on its European path, a document containing key messages from EP member Vladimir Bilcik's report on Serbia, with 538 votes in favor, 69 against and 79 abstaining.
The EP rapporteur for Serbia, Bilcik compiled a report covering the last two years based on the European Commission report from November 2020.
The resolution warns that normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo and actual respect for fundamental rights were crucial to setting the pace for talks on EU membership. In it, EP members expressed concern over the current Serbian parliament, which includes no opposition, and the legitimacy of the body, which is disputed by opposition parties.
The resolution reiterates the importance of Serbia aligning with the EU's foreign and security policy, since Serbia currently has the lowest alignment rate in the region.
On March 25, the EP also adopted reports, i.e. resolutions on Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania with an overwhelming majority.
The resolution on Kosovo urges the governments of Serbia and Kosovo to refrain from any action that could disrupt trust between the two sides. Pointing out that five EU members have not recognized Kosovo, the EP members called on these nations again to do so, stating that Kosovo's independence is irreversible.
In all four resolutions, the EP members stressed the importance of bolstering the fight against corruption and organized crime, together with good neighborly relations and regional cooperation.
