Serbian Health Ministry State Secretary Mirsad Djerlek said on April 19 that there is no room for panic, but neither is there room for relaxation given “how high” the daily numbers of the newly infected COVID-19 cases still are.

“It’s still early and we have to speed up the immunization,” Djerlek said for Pink TV. He called on the citizens to make use of the “great number of vaccine doses that are to arrive in the next few days,” and book a vaccination to speed up the inoculation tempo.

“I fully believe that we’ll succeed,” Djerlek said, adding that the Russian vaccine, soon to be manufactured by the Belgrade Torlak Institute, will greatly contribute to the immunization efforts in Serbia.

Djerlek also remarked that the citizens’ interest in getting the shots is on the rise. He hopes that by the end of June, around 2.5 to 3 million citizens will have been vaccinated, thus hindering the spread of the virus.

Serbia, he believes, is sure to overcome both COVID-19 and the anti-vaxxers. “We’ve science-based evidence that what the anti-vaxxers are posting and sharing on social media, is nonsense,” Djerlek said.
