The EU has welcomed the support of Serbia and other EU candidate countries to a fresh round of restrictive measures against Belarus.
On June 4, the EU Council decided to strengthen the existing restrictive measures in view of the situation in Belarus by introducing a ban on the overflight of EU airspace and on access to EU airports by Belarusian carriers of all kinds, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said in the evening on June 21.
“The EU candidate countries – North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Albania and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member countries - Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, the European Economic Area (EEA) member states, have joined the Council Decision. They will ensure that their national policies are in line with this Decision of the Council. The EU takes note of this obligation and welcomes it,” Borrell said.
The EU imposed a new round of restrictive measures following the unlawful forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk on 23 May 2021, and the detention by Belarusian authorities of journalist and activist Raman Pratasevich and his girlfriend.
