Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated in Belgrade on July 8 that Serbia was the key to stability in the Western Balkans.
"Every region has a central country. We had the country that was key at the time of integration – that was Poland. I therefore support Serbia and its membership in the European Union, because the whole of Western Balkans stands behind it. For as long as Serbia is not integrated, the Western Balkans will not be integrated.. Serbia is the crucial country and the EU must realize that," Orban told reporters after the meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
He said that the region's stability was not just an economic and political matter, but also one of cohabitation. "Anyone can write a biography, but numbers do not lie. And If you look at Serbia's numbers from the past seven years, anyone can see that a success story is being formed there," the prime minister stated.
The coronavirus pandemic, he said, is waning, but that "will put migration back into focus." "Danger knocks – mass migration. We will once again have the well-known problem. If you follow the news from Afghanistan, there are already hundreds of thousands of people leaving that country, due to the dramatic change in the situation. They are reaching Turkey unobstructed, and the Balkans is the next step," Orban warned.
